Concrete driveway cost by size

Estimates from this page's default prices for a 4 in driveway with #4 rebar, 4 in of gravel base, a broom finish and average site prep, with no old driveway to remove. Change the defaults above to match quotes or supplier prices near you.

DrivewaySizeInstalledPer sq ft
1-car12 × 20 ft$2,350–$3,500$12.24
2-car20 × 20 ft$3,550–$5,350$11.14
2-car, deeper24 × 24 ft$4,800–$7,200$10.45
Long single12 × 50 ft$5,000–$7,550$10.47

Concrete driveway cost per square foot

With these defaults, driveways from 12 × 20 to 40 × 20 ft come to about $10.24–$12.24 per square foot installed, before removing an old one. A 2-car 20 × 20 driveway works out to about $11.14 per sq ft, and a 40 × 20 driveway to about $10.24, because setup and the short-load fee are spread over more area. Materials alone for the 20 × 20 come to about $2,052.

Replacing an old driveway

Tearing out and hauling away the old surface is often the biggest extra. We default to $3 per sq ft for old concrete and $2 for asphalt. On a 20 × 20 driveway that brings the total to about $4,500–$6,800 over old concrete, or $4,200–$6,300 over old asphalt.

Asphalt vs concrete driveway cost

Using our asphalt driveway cost estimator's defaults (3 in of hot mix on 6 in of gravel), a 20 × 20 asphalt driveway comes to about $4,100–$6,150, against $3,550–$5,350 in concrete here. A 12 × 50 driveway is about $5,450–$8,150 in asphalt and $5,000–$7,550 in concrete. With these defaults asphalt comes out higher, mostly because paving equipment and setup cost the same on a small job. The gap varies a lot by region and season, so get quotes for both. Asphalt also needs sealing every few years.

Thickness and finish

A 4 in driveway is common for cars. Thicker slabs suit trucks, RVs or soft soil: on a 20 × 20 driveway, 5 in comes to about $3,750–$5,600 and 6 in to about $4,000–$6,000. A stamped and colored finish brings it to about $5,000–$7,500, or about $15.64 per sq ft. Exposed aggregate comes to about $4,050–$6,050.

What changes the price

How this estimate works

Concrete is length × width × thickness plus 10%, ordered in quarter yards at $170 per yard, with a $150 short-load fee under 6 yards, as in our concrete calculator. Gravel base is crusher run at 1.5 tons per cubic yard plus 15% for compaction, $38 a ton and $85 delivery. Forms are $1.50 per foot of edge. Rebar is $1.05 per sq ft (#4 bar on an 18 in grid) and wire mesh $0.35.

The contractor's markup on materials is 20%. Labor is 4 hours of setup plus, per 100 sq ft, 5 hours to form, pour and finish, 1.5 hours of site prep and 1 hour for rebar. Labor is charged at $60 an hour, a billed rate that includes the contractor's overhead and profit, not a crew wage. Removal is a per-square-foot charge. The range is the result minus 20% to plus 20%. Change any of these above.

Homewyse puts a concrete driveway at $9.59–$11.78 per sq ft installed (Homewyse, May 2026), for a 4 in fiber-reinforced slab without excavation, gravel base or demolition of an old driveway. This estimate's default 20 × 20 driveway, with rebar and 4 in of gravel base and no removal, comes to about $11.14 per sq ft. See also the concrete slab cost guide.

Getting quotes

Compare quotes on thickness, base depth, reinforcement, finish, control joints and removal of the old driveway. Ask who handles the apron and permit, and how long to stay off the new concrete. If a quote is far below this estimate, ask what's left out.

Questions

Is asphalt cheaper than concrete for a driveway?

Not with these defaults. A 20 × 20 driveway is about $4,100–$6,150 in asphalt and $3,550–$5,350 in concrete, because paving equipment and setup weigh heavily on a small job. Prices vary by region, so get quotes for both.
