What to put on a contractor invoice
- Invoice number, invoice date and due date
- The customer's name and the job address
- Line items for the work done, matching your quote and any change orders
- Deposit already paid, and the balance due
- How to pay, and any late fee
Payment terms
| Term | Means | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Due on receipt | Pay when you get it | Residential jobs, small repairs |
| Net 15 | Pay within 15 days | Repeat residential customers |
| Net 30 | Pay within 30 days | Commercial and property managers |
Say exactly how to pay you on the invoice: a payment link from your processor, Zelle details, or who to make checks out to. The fewer steps it takes, the faster you get paid.
Questions
Can I make an invoice in Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Fill it in above, choose Download, then Word. The file opens in Word, or upload it to Google Drive to edit in Google Docs.
Should I charge a late fee?
Many contractors add 1–1.5% a month on overdue balances. State it in your terms before the job starts, and check your state's limits.
