Tile installation cost per square foot
Per square foot, tile costs more on small jobs. With these defaults, ceramic floor tile comes to about $22.80 per sq ft for 40 sq ft, $17.75 for 100 sq ft and $15.00 for 500 sq ft. The reason is fixed time: the estimate includes 4 hours for layout, setup, mixing and a return trip to grout, whatever the size.
Labor is most of the price. For 100 sq ft of ceramic floor, materials are about $417 and labor works out to about $12.75 per sq ft.
Bathroom tile installation cost
A 40 sq ft bathroom floor in ceramic comes to about $730–$1,090, including cement backer board over a wood subfloor. Over a flat concrete slab you can skip the backer, which brings it to about $620–$930. Tearing out old tile first raises the floor to about $970–$1,450.
Shower walls take longer: more cuts, corners and niches, plus backer board and a waterproofing membrane. For 100 sq ft of shower walls, 12 × 24 in porcelain comes to about $2,200–$3,300, and 3 × 6 in ceramic subway tile about $2,500–$3,750. The pan, valve, glass and plumbing are separate.
Ceramic vs porcelain tile installation cost
Ceramic and porcelain install at about the same rate, so the difference is the tile. For 200 sq ft of floor, ceramic at $2 per sq ft comes to about $2,550–$3,850 and porcelain at $3.50 to about $2,900–$4,300. Porcelain is denser and harder to cut, and many installers charge a little more for it; this estimate doesn't.
What changes the price
- Tile size: mosaics and small subway tile take about 50% longer per sq ft than 12 × 12 in. 100 sq ft of mosaic is about $1,700–$2,550 against $1,400–$2,150. Large format (24 × 48 in) also takes longer to flatten, about $1,750–$2,600 in porcelain.
- Surface: walls take 25% longer than floors here, and showers 50% longer.
- Pattern: diagonal and herringbone layouts add cuts and waste. Use 15% waste.
- Subfloor: uneven or bouncy floors need leveling or reinforcement first.
- Trim pieces: bullnose, Schluter edge and niches add material and time.
- Permits: many towns require one for shower work involving plumbing. Check local rules.
How this estimate works
Labor rates and setting materials follow our tile calculator: 0.10 worker hours per sq ft for 12 × 12 and 12 × 24 in tile, 0.11 for 6 × 24 in planks, 0.12 for 24 × 48 in, and 0.15 for mosaics and small tile. Thinset is one $30 bag per 42 to 100 sq ft depending on the trowel the tile needs, and grout uses the calculator's joint-volume formula at $25 a bag. Tile is ceramic $2, porcelain $3.50 or stone $7 per sq ft, plus 10% waste.
Walls multiply setting time by 1.25 and showers by 1.5. Backer board is a $14 sheet per 15 sq ft plus 10%, and waterproofing is $1.25 per sq ft; each adds 0.03 hours per sq ft. Tear-out is 0.05 hours per sq ft for tile and 0.015 for carpet or vinyl, plus $150 to haul away. Every job gets 4 hours of setup and return-trip time. Labor is billed at $75 per worker hour, including the installer's overhead and profit, and the markup on materials is 20%. The range is the result minus 20% to plus 20%. Change any of these above.
For comparison, Homewyse lists $16.38–$20.21 per sq ft to install ceramic floor tile (May 2026 figures, accessed November 2026); with these defaults, 100 sq ft of ceramic floor comes to about $17.75 per sq ft.
